Lifting Equipment Selection Guide
Lifting Equipment Selection Guide
Marine Ropes supplies a comprehensive range of certified lifting equipment for marine, mining, port, and industrial operations across Southern Africa. As a LEEA-accredited supplier, all lifting products are sourced, handled, and supplied in accordance with LEEA standards.
This guide helps you select the right lifting equipment for your operation. For specific load calculations or product recommendations, contact our technical team.
Chain Blocks and Hoists
Chain blocks (also called chain hoists) are manual lifting devices used to raise, lower, and position heavy loads. They are essential equipment in workshops, warehouses, construction sites, and on board vessels.
We stock chain blocks from 0.5 ton up to 30 ton capacity. Lever hoists are also available for horizontal pulling and tensioning applications. Electric hoists are available for higher-volume lifting operations.
Selection criteria: Choose based on the maximum load you need to lift, the lift height required, and whether manual or powered operation is preferred. Always select a chain block with a rated capacity that exceeds your maximum load.
Shackles
Shackles are the most common rigging connector. Marine Ropes stocks over 90 shackle products in two main types:
Dee Shackles (D-shackles): Used where the load is applied in a straight line. Available from 500kg to 35 ton in galvanised and stainless steel (316SS). Suitable for connecting rope, chain, or wire rope to fixed anchor points.
Bow Shackles: Wider body allows multi-directional loading. Available from 0.5 ton to 120 ton. Yellow pin Grade S galvanised options available for heavy lifting. Use bow shackles when the load may shift direction or when connecting multiple slings to one point.
Lifting Hooks
Marine Ropes stocks over 290 hook products including:
Carbon steel hooks: Standard lifting hooks for general applications.
Self-locking hooks: Feature a spring-loaded safety latch that prevents accidental disconnection under load.
Chain grab hooks: Designed to grip chain links at any point along the chain length. Essential for chain sling shortening and adjustment.
Recovery hooks: Heavy-duty hooks for vehicle and vessel recovery operations.
Carabiner hooks: Quick-connect hooks for lighter loads and safety lines. Available in steel and stainless steel.
Webbing sling hooks: Designed specifically for use with webbing slings.
Eye Bolts and Nuts
Eye bolts provide a fixed anchor point for attaching lifting equipment. We stock 67 eye bolt products in various thread sizes and materials. Use galvanised eye bolts for outdoor or marine environments.
Lifting Slings
Slings connect the load to the lifting device. Types available:
Webbing slings: Lightweight, flexible, and gentle on loads. Colour-coded by capacity.
Chain slings: Durable, heat resistant, and suitable for rough or hot loads.
Wire rope slings: High strength-to-weight ratio, suitable for heavy loads.
Rigging Hardware
Supporting hardware for rigging operations:
Thimbles: Protect rope eyes from wear at connection points. 33 products in stock.
Wire clamps: Secure wire rope ends and form eye terminations. 32 products.
Turnbuckles and rigging screws: Adjust tension in wire rope, rod, or chain assemblies. 46 products.
Beam clamps and crawlers: Attach hoisting equipment to steel beams. 20 products.
Swivels: Allow rotation under load to prevent twisting.
Selection Checklist
When selecting lifting equipment, consider:
1. What is the maximum weight you need to lift?
2. What is the required lift height?
3. What is the environment? (indoor, outdoor, marine, high temperature)
4. Does the load require protection from damage? (use webbing slings for finished surfaces)
5. Is the load a single point lift or multi-leg sling arrangement?
6. What certification documentation does your site require?
7. Will the equipment be used for personnel lifting? (higher safety factors apply)
Certification
Marine Ropes is a LEEA-accredited supplier. All lifting equipment is supplied with appropriate documentation. Mill certificates are available for load-bearing products confirming material composition and tested breaking loads. Test certificates for individual items are available on request for equipment requiring unique identification and proof testing.
